PMD (Viscount) Open Headrest Front Seats

PMD Open Headrest Front SeatsThese were only available in 1982 and 1983 Pontiac Firebirds. In 1982, they came standard on the Firebird SEs and as a popular option on all Firebirds, except those with the Recaro Trans Am package. In 1983, they were still available as an option. They are easy to identify, due to a plastic emblem with the letters PMD sewn into the fronts of the seats.

The PMD seats are sometimes confused with the Recaro seats, which also had an open headrest. However, it is easy to tell the two apart. Recaro seats have a more square headrest which is not as smoothly integrated into the rest of the seat, and include netting inside the opening. The plastic emblem on it reads "Recaro" instead of "PMD".

PMD seats can be purchased with manual or electric adjustment, but only the driver side seat comes with electric adjustments.

Rear Seats

Solid-back Rear SeatsThe rear seats in KITT changed from a solid-back rear seats (shown in this picture) in the 1st and 2nd seasons, to the split-back rear seats of the 3rd and 4th seasons. KARR always had solid-back rear seats.

Seat Belts

Seat BeltKITT only had seat belts briefly during the first episode "Knight of the Phoenix". In fact, during the racing scenes of that episode, KITT also had two black racing harnesses (for the driver and passenger seats).

Other than that episode, neither KITT nor KARR had seat belts. Despite this, most knight replicas have seat belts due to the obvious safety hazards of driving a real car in the real world.

Item

Rear View Mirror

Rear View MirrorNeither KITT nor KARR had a rear view mirror. Since removing this poses no real safety threat or legal problems (as long as you have side mirrors), many replicas owners remove this item.

Additional Information

In some scenes (particularly older footage), you can still see the mounting piece stuck to the windshield.

Item

Round Gear Shifter Knob

Round Gear Knob and StemBoth KITT and KARR both had the round gear shifter knobs that can only be found in the 1982 Pontiac Firebirds with automatic transmissions. This knob is almost always shown shifting into gear whenever KITT starts up and drives by himself. They can easily be made to fit a later year.

The round knob itself is not too difficult to find at most salvage yards, but the button insert and stem can be extremely hard to find. Many of these are ruined by people who are salvaging the transmission and could care less about the shifter.

Carpet and Underlay

Underlay
Passenger Area Carpet
Cargo Hatch Carpet
Unless the carpet in your replica is already the correct color (doeskin) and is in good condition, you will probably need to replace both the carpet and the underlay.

The underlay acts as a barrier between the frame and the carpet, insulating it from outside temperatures, moisture, rust, oil, and noise. It is a good idea to replace the underlay when you replace the carpet, as it will help keep your carpet stay looking new. Newer underlays also provide additional noise reduction.

1982 Pontiac Firebirds (like KITT and KARR) had cut pile carpet, and it is best to have it pre-formed to make installation easier. Carpet is very hard to work with when it is cold, so make sure to warm it up a bit before trying to work with it. Leave it in the sunshine or use heat lamps to make it pliable.

Many carpet kits come in two sections: the passenger area, and the cargo hatch area. Make sure you order both at the same time from the same company. This will ensure that their hue and brightness will match. If possible, ask that the supplier match both before they ship them to you.

Do not rely on color names when purchasing carpet. Different carpet manufacturers use different color names. If you are serious about having your carpet color accurate, submit an unfaded sample of the tan carpet from a 1982 Trans Am for them to match (the carpet sample can be cut from a car at a salvage yard).

Plastic Trim

Plastic TrimIf your donor car did not come with a tan interior, finding and replacing your interior plastic trim will be quite a big part of restoration. Pontiac dealers still stock plastic trim for 1982 Firebirds, but they come unpainted, so you are better off painting your old trim or buying whatever good trim you can find in salvage yards.

Several people have reported success at repainting trim, but it is somewhat of an art, so unless you have a lot of experience with paint, you should at the least get some advice from a professional about which paints to use and how to apply them. You might also consider having the professional do it for you.

Headliner, Sail Panels, and Sun Visors

Sail PanelsLike the carpets, its a good idea to order these all at once from the same company and have them match them before shipping. Otherwise, the fabric hue and brightness will not match.

The correct color for 1982 Firebirds (like KITT and KARR) is doeskin. Neither KITT nor KARR had a driver side sun visor because the overhead console occupies that space.

Fiberglass T-Top Headliner Board

Fiberglass T-Top Headliner BoardThis newly designed item replaces the original cardboard T-Top headliner boards, which are made of fiberboard and prone to sagging. This board is made from fiberglass, so it is strong and durable, which means no more sagging.

Weather Stripping for T-Tops

Weather Stripping for T-TopsPontiac Firebirds are notorious for T-Tops that leak, rattle, and let in wind noise . If your replica has any of these problems, it is time to replace the weather stripping.

Door Panels

Door PanelDoor panels suffer a lot of abuse from the inside and outside. Scuff marks and tears on the interior and rotting from moisture caught in the doors can make them look old beyond their years. Luckily, there is now a company which makes replacement door panels, with plastic backing so they will never hold moisture and rot again.

Both KITT and KARR had doeskin tan door panels in the style shown in this picture (note that the holes for the door handle and trim have not been installed on this sample).

Dash

Dash (with Switch Pods)There are two main types of dashes: Dual Monitor (from the 1st and 2nd season) and Single Monitor (from the 3rd and 4th season). In addition, each manufacturer produces a slightly different variation on each type of dash, since there are no original molds from which to copy.

Selecting the dash you need depends on several things:

  • Which knight replica are you making?
KITT 1st and 2nd season requires a dual monitor dash.
KITT 3rd and 4th season requires a single monitor dash.
KARR (all seasons) requires a dual monitor dash.

  • What electronics do you want to install into the dash?
Some dashes only work with certain electronic sets, and buying both the electronics and the dash together as a package can save money. Contact individual suppliers for information about what electronics can be used in their dashes.

  • How much money are you willing to spend and how much work are you willing to do?
Prices vary widely between manufacturers, and many offer "out of the mold" products which cost less, but require you to do the finishing.

Switch Pods

Switch PodsThis item hangs over the steering column, with the pods to the left and right of the steering wheel. On each pod are arrays of lighted buttons for the amazing and famous functions, like "TURBO BOOST" and "OIL SLICK".

Deciding which switch pod to purchase relies heavily on which dash you decide to use. Some dashes have built in switch pods, and due to differences in design, some dashes will only work with switch pods made by the same manufacturer.

Armrest Console

Armrest Console
Upper Console with Armrest Console and Dash Support
The armrest console is a panel of buttons and indicators (and even a disk drive in later seasons) which was located directly behind the gear shifter on the upper console. Although the buttons on the panel changed between seasons, the basic shape of the console remained.

Despite this, there are many different versions of this console for sale. Some include just the panel itself (like in this first picture), others include a dash support, and some even include the armrest console, the dash support, and the upper console integrated into a single piece (like in this second picture).

Additional Information

Be careful not to confuse "upper console" with "overhead console".

The upper console sits on top of the lower console, which sits on top of the transmission hump.

Overhead Console

1st and 2nd Season Overhead Console
3rd and 4th Season Overhead Console
The overhead console also differs between seasons. The 1st and 2nd season overhead console (shown in the first picture) was considerably larger and included linear read-outs in the front.

The 3rd and 4th season console (shown in the second picture) was much smaller and had a larger row of buttons down the middle.
